Tiger's Nest

Without question, one of the most incredible sites in Bhutan is the Tiger's Nest. This monastery and shrine is the site of meditation by Guru Rinpoche, who by legend flew to the site on the back of a tigress. It is a venerated site throughout the Buddhist world and particularly for Himalayan Buddhism.

It is also utterly breathtaking. The combination of site, the buildings, and vigorous climb render the visitor breathless and dumbfounded by the beauty and intense spirituality of this place. The pictures do not do it justice. The climb requires considerable effort, but is well worth it. There are no pictures of the inside because that is not allowed. We had to physically surrender our cell phones, cameras, and be willing to be frisked to get it.

At the end of the day we  had a superb Bhutanese meal in Paro. More about the food in another installment.

  1. Incredible, indeed. Haha... still, perhaps it's the altitude that's actually breath-taking? Ha! Seriously, it's a lovely place and it would be interesting if you talked about the food they have there.
